When I was a little girl, we got our first artificial Christmas tree. When my grandma came over to admire it, she politely asked my mom if that’s how we intended the tree to look. Then Grandma proceeded to fluff the tree and move the branches around … and somehow, the already-decorated tree really did look better when she was done.

And even as a little girl (I was about 7), I knew that some people (my grandma) just know how to make things beautiful, and other people (me) know how to make things fine but never quite beautiful. So as much as I admire theme decorations, fancy cakes and other crafty touches, I tend to leave that kind of thing to other people. Except when it’s this easy. Green bread for St. Paddy’s Day – I think even my grandma would approve!

Preheat oven to 375°. Combine first 4 ingredients; stir to blend. Add more food coloring for a deeper green colored bread. Spread batter in a greased 9 x 5 loaf pan; drizzle with butter. Bake 55-60 minutes or until browned. Makes 14 servings.

Tips:

  • The Sweet Jalapeno Dip Starter will add a lot of spicy heat to the bread. Use less than ½ cup or leave it out altogether if you prefer.
  • Serve the bread with prepared Sweet Jalapeno Dip (cream cheese added to the dip starter as directed on the jar).
  • For a stronger beer flavor, use an Irish stout or a dark lager.

Okay, so I missed St. Patrick’s Day with this one, so I left out the green food coloring (though I did enjoy a green beer on St. P Day :) Oh my green bread and damn…. This is absolutely delicious!

I mixed up some of the cream cheese dip to go with it and did not even use a spreader – just dipped the bread right in that sweet cream cheese mix! I sliced the rest of the bread and threw it in the freezer to enjoy with another meal – the bread freezes great!
